George Melas Taylor of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation grew up on the Namgis Reserve in Alert Bay, British Columbia, where he learned the traditional ways and values of his people. Both his parents were from Chieftainship families.
Upon earning a Degree in Social Work in 1976, he moved to Victoria to become a social worker for several First Nations’ Bands. Through his involvement with the many problems and obstacles facing the First Nation’s youth, he realized the need and importance of creating a dance society to support and guide them. Under the guidance of elders and chiefs, the Le-La-La Dancers Society was formed in 1987. Since then, with much hard work and dedication, George has committed himself to the development and leadership of a traditional performing group. He has guided the group in many local and international events and venues, including schools, workshops, theatrical plays, festivals, cultural tours, conferences and cultural exchanges. Since 1998 Taylor has been able to devote his full time to being Le-La-La’s Artistic Director.
George and the group have been hired throughout the world as ambassadors of Canada’s First Nations culture. Recently, they’ve travelled to China and Mexico on behalf of the Canadian Tourism Commission. George strives to give all clients an educational experience by delivering positive messages in a high energy demonstration of ancient legends of his people through vibrant regalia featuring traditional carved cedar masks, button blankets and headdresses.
