‘Ksan is a cultural interpretive centre approximately 180 miles east of Prince Rupert, dedicated to demonstrating and showcasing the richness of Gitxsan culture and heritage.

180 miles east of Prince Rupert stands ‘Ksan Historical Village & Museum, a reconstructed village of the People of the River of Mist the Gitxsan, featuring more than 600 Gitxsan and Wetsuweten artifacts, guided cultural tours, traditional songs and dancing, a carving area, Gitxsan totem poles and a series of traditional First Nation houses overlooking the confluence of the historic Bulkley and Skeena rivers.

Museum

The museum is the oldest component of ‘Ksan Historical Village and Museum. Since 1960, ‘Ksan’s antecedent the Skeena Treasure House, and the present ‘Ksan Historical Village and Museum, have been amassing a sizeable collection from the surrounding area.

‘Ksan’s museum collection consists of approximately 600 items. Comprised of both ceremonial and utilitarian materials, this collection illustrates the great diversity within the material culture of the Gitxsan. Items include bent boxes, ceremonial masks, button blankets, shaman’s regalia, fishing gear, hunting utensils, and assorted lithic artifacts housed in a proper museum facility with environmental controls.

Dance Performances

Traditional Gitxsan song and dance at ‘Ksan Historical Village and Museum. Performances to be held in the Feast House (Wolf House) every Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. from July 4th to August 8th. Tickets sales will be held at the door starting at 6:30 p.m.

Walking Tours

As a replicated ancient village, ‘Ksan illustrates many features of a Gitxsan village from the distant past. Tours are offered in the following houses: The Frog House (Wilp Lax See'l) - the house of the distant past, represents Gitxsan culture before European contact. The Wolf House (Wilp Lax Gibuu) - the feast house, presents the Gitxsan governing system commonly referred to as the potlatch. The Fireweed House (Wilp Gisk'aast) - the treasure house, displays the regalia used by 'Ksan Performing Arts Group.
