Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art

Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art is Vancouver's newest public art gallery. The gallery is named after one of Canada’s greatest artists of the 20th century. Born in 1920 from a mother of Haida descent and a father of European descent, Bill Reid was brought up, and lived most of his life, in British Columbia. When he died in March 1998, he left a legacy of magnificent works of art from the most intricate to the monumental - in woodcarving, exquisite jewellery, beautiful prints, and massive sculptures. The gallery’s permanent installations include Restoring Enchantment: Gold and Silver Master Works by Bill Reid; the monumental bronze sculpture, Mythic Messengers, composed of eleven intertwined figures recounting traditional Haida myths; and a monumental cedar pole carved by James Hart of Haida Gwaii. Two of the exhibition spaces feature changing exhibitions of Aboriginal northwest coast art, cultural performances, and lectures.
