Haida Heritage Centre

Located on scenic Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands), this new cultural centre celebrates the living culture of the Haida, dating back some 12,000 years. This spectacular Centre, owned and operated by the Skidegate Band, is located at the old Haida seaside village site of Qay'llnagaay or "Sea Lion Town". Fronted with six traditional totem poles representing each of the 14 clans, the Centre resembles a series of Haida longhouses and showcases the unique living culture, art and history of the Haida people. This world-class Centre includes the Haida Gwaii Museum, has extensive exhibits and audio-visuals, artisans' workshops and the Bill Reid Teaching Centre. Visitors may have an opportunity to experience traditional performances in the "Performing House" and see carvers working on monumental totem poles and canoes in the carving shed. The work of Haida artists and artisans can be purchased in the "Trading House" Gift Shop. In the "Eating House" visitors may enjoy traditional Haida cuisine and other light meals. Parks Canada provides daily visitor orientations and evening presentations about Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site in one of the classrooms at the Centre.
