U'mista Cultural Centre

 

U'mista Cultural Centre is located in Alert Bay, easily accessible by a scenic ferry ride from Port McNeill, on northeastern Vancouver Island. U'mista Cultural Society's mandate is to ensure the survival of all aspects of cultural heritage of the Kwakwaka'wakw First Nations from Alert Bay, the northest coast of Vancouver Island and the adjacent mainland coast of British Columbia. U'mista Cultural Centre's main permanent exhibit is called "The Potlatch Collection". Other exhibits include descriptions of the traditional ethno biology of the Kwakwaka'wakw and the origin stories of the member villages. Throughout July and August, scheduled performances of traditional Kwakwaka'wakw dances are performed by the T’sasala Cultural Group in the Alert Bay Big House. Dance performances are scheduled Thursday to Saturday at 1:15pm.
