Culture Shock Interactive Gallery
Located in a waterfront heritage location near the ferry in Alert Bay, this First Nations owned and operated cultural tourism gallery introduces the visitor to the traditional arts, culture and way of life of our people. Spend time in the gallery viewing awardwinning films about our culture and history while enjoying the best coffee on the island; and shop for locally made wearable cedar, one-of-a-kind jewelry and clothing which features unique designs inspired by local creatures and our traditional legends. Participate in interactive cultural experiences through our 'Namgis Roots program: hands-on lessons teach you how to weave cedar bark into your own bracelet and educate you on the significance of cedar to the 'Namgis people; paddle a traditional-style canoe through spectacular scenery, while your First Nations guide shares local history and stories; learn the traditional way of preparing BBQ salmon on cedar sticks before an open fire and afterwards, savor this mouth watering wild sockeye salmon; and enjoy the tradition of storytelling as an Elder recounts the 'Namgis' history and legends that have been passed down through the generations.
