Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre

The Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre was established in 1975 by chiefs and elders to facilitate the return of the sacred potlatch collection, consisting of masks and regalia. Today, these beautiful treasures are exhibited in three galleries to share the culture, traditions and history of the Kwa'kwa'ka'wa'kw people. The Nuyumbalees gift gallery has a fine selection of artwork, carvings and prints of local artists as well as books, cards, jewelry and clothing. The Kwi Kwi Gillas cultural education centre has a resource library and an artist workspace for artists to showcase their artwork and to allow visitors and guests to watch the artist work and learn in the process. The Ah-Wah-Qwa-Dzas, a place to relax and tell stories, is a pavilion on the waterfront. It has a barbecue pit for salmon barbecue demonstrations and four poles, which were designed and carved by local artists. Visitors to the cultural centre can take a guided tour or enjoy the exhibits at their leisure and then see a movie and make a rubbing from a petroglyph cast in the lower gallery.
