First Nations Fashions Come Alive on the Catwalk at the Pan Pacific

Coast Salish Territory - Vancouver Feb 20, 2010

First Nations culture and heritage is alive on the fashion catwalks of the world as internationally-acclaimed designers

Dorothy Grant and Pam Baker weave their culture into wearable art pieces featured in exhibitions, galleries and museums world wide.

Featuring a blend of modern technology and style with traditional values and symbols, these designers have created lines of couture, sportswear and accessories inspired by British Columbia’s First Nations cultures.

In a fashion show today at the Kla-how-ya Village Exhibit at Pan Pacific Vancouver, First Nations models displayed selections from Grant and Bakers’ collections before an international audience.

Dorothy Grant

is a Kaigani Haida of the raven clan and spins the 10,000 old legends of the Haida into high style, fusing myth into each flawlessly designed and manufactured garment. Her garments, ceremonial button blankets and spruce root hats are treasured by Haidas as expressions of living culture and can be found in art collections and various museums in Canada and the United States. Pam Baker

blends intelligence, humour and thought- provoking ideas into her collection which includes sportswear, ready-to-wear, wearable art and limited edition one-of-a-kind pieces. Based on the Capilano Reserve in North Vancouver, Baker’s designs are centred on the principle of providing First Nations peoples with the opportunity to explore how modern technology and style can be blended with traditional values and symbols. More information at www.toclegends.com
